Car Battery Tips & Tricks by Modbury Battery Adelaide

Battery care is a subject many of us don’t give a second thought – until the worst happens and we find ourselves seeking assistance for a discharged battery. Extreme temperatures, hot or cold, can reduce the life of your car battery in Adelaide. In cold temperatures the chemical reaction inside of the battery slows down wreaking havoc on battery performance and life. Though batteries are usually sturdy and can function under extreme conditions, the change in weather can degrade high-quality batteries and make inferior batteries completely useless. Best way to minimize the impact of weather change and its effect on your battery life is to be prepared and be aware of your battery condition.

MAKE SURE THAT THE BATTERY IS ALWAYS IN THE BEST SHAPE POSSIBLE

We recommend taking some precautionary measure before the arrival of cold weather to protect your car battery. What that means is that a battery that is properly maintained is better equipped to handle the types of temperature swings that can cause problems.

  1. ASSESS THE AGE OF YOUR BATTERY: If your battery is old and showing signs of distress, now may be the time to replace it. Different batteries have different lifespans, however, many last anywhere from five to ten years. It may be a good idea to get a new battery before the arrival of winter if your several years old car is still running on its original battery. Look inside the owners’ manual to find out more about the correct battery for the make of your car.
  2. CHECK AND FILL ELECTROLYTE: regular checking of electrolyte in batteries helps keep it in good condition but it is also important to know how strong, or weak, the solution is. Make sure to use the right solution for your battery type.
  3. KEEP BATTERY CONNECTIONS CLEAN: ensure the electrical connections are clean and that the battery is properly charged. Confirm that there is no corrosion on the battery as it can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-out battery. Regularly inspect the battery to stay on top of issues that may cause corrosion and cause you trouble. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed and make sure the battery is correctly seated.
